Ottensheim to Grein – 77 kilometres

For some reason this morning I’m finding it hard to get motivated; my ‘get and go’ has got up and gone.  The weather is looking pretty good, cool with clouds but with blue bits of sky showing, so it’s not that.  I’m not unwell so, hopefully, my enthusiasm will return as the day goes on.

We make a start reasonably early and wait to see what the day brings.  Not anything that you would want unfortunately.  Such a contrast with yesterday, instead of lovely tranquil river scenery, we have main roads, industrial estates, shopping complexes and all other manner of 21st century city living.  On top of it all the sign-posting is terrible.  We, along with dozens of other cyclists are going round in circles trying to find our way.  At one stage we are directed by the signs into a dead-end car park in front of MacDonalds – a marketing ploy, no doubt.  We are so fed up we stop and have a drink and snack and whilst sitting outside eating actually witness the craziness of the road sign fitters.  A guy in a van pulls up and takes off a ‘turn right only’ sign and replaces it with a ‘no entry’ sign.  This is despite the fact that all the arrows painted on the road direct the traffic out that way and the exit signs in the car park also point out that way.  He then stands and berates the motorists who try to drive through his newly erected ‘no entry’ sign!

The day continues to be frustrating as far as the sign-posting goes, although the path does start to go through some nicer countryside.  We decide that today is not the day for a long run and stop at a campsite mid-afternoon.  It too looks to be pretty good and has WiFi that works, so a slightly more positive end to the day.
