Regensburg to Deggendorf – 84 kilometres

We start with a 4-star breakfast – this hotel has been the most luxurious of the trip so far.  After a couple of sunny days the temperature is building, but today has the feeling of a storm brewing.

The cycling is very easy, flat runs either alongside the river or through fields.  We have left the cereal crops behind, now we are in root vegetable territory.  We can see the mountains on the horizon and we’re not sure if that is where we are heading or not.  If we are, it won’t be today.

The kilometres are soon covered and our accommodation for the night illustrates the contrasts that you experience on a cycle tour.  Another strange German campsite, with an area roughly the size of half a tennis court set aside for tents.  There is just one other tent there when we arrive, but if another 10 turn up, they will all be crammed onto this one small square of grass.  Fortunately, no one else wants to join us.

The upside of place was the small riverside beach complete with cocktail bar.  The riverside promenade was heaving with people wandering down for a Sunday night stroll and a drink.  It was an entertaining place to spend an hour or two.  We got back to the tent just as the thunder and lightning started.
