Without a doubt this is the most disappointing day of the tour so far.
We have cycled 95 kilometres without so much as a glimpse of the river – the reason – more work to build flood defences. The route has been diverted inland and although for some of the time it makes its way through woodland and fields, much of the time is spent on the back streets of dreary housing estates or on cycle tracks alongside roads.
We’re both a bit fed up by the end of the day and it is not helped by finding that all the ‘tent’ symbols on the map turn out to be for private caravan parks again and so we end up having to stay in a hotel. It has none of the charm of our accommodation yesterday, but it does have WiFi. We just hope that we’re back on the riverbank tomorrow., if not, we may have to adjust our plans and head off on our own route rather than the official version.
