Day 25 – At sea, Santander to Plymouth – 22 kms

The good news is that we survived the night without getting sea-sick.  Once we’re up and about though we need to keep the horizon in sight otherwise we both start to feel a bit queasy. I don’t think cruising would be our thing, especially as we’ve walked all the decks after about half-an-hour and we’re wondering what we’re going to do until 4.15pm when we land.  We’re both desperate to be back on the bikes and on our way.  Passing through the newspaper shop we see a story on a front page that says something along the lines of ‘Arctic blast due to arrive this weekend’ – typical!  When I checked the long-range forecast it had said that May in the UK was going to be tropical (I might be exaggerating a bit, but it did say it was going to be exceptional warm).

When we land we are thrust into the rush hour traffic in the centre of Plymouth – not a pleasant experience – but fairly quickly we spot a sign for a cycle route to Plympton, which is where we are heading.  The tarmac path quickly turns into a muddy track, not really suitable for the loaded bikes, but at least it does continue to Plympton.  Once there we discover that the only place to stay is back along the main road towards Plymouth – oh dear.  The traffic on the main road is absolutely relentless.  Fortunately, we don’t have to go too far back, only 2 or 3 kilometres or so, before we spot a ‘Premier Inn’.  I had remembered this chain of ‘motels’ as being reasonably cheap and so was surprised to find that a room for the night cost 75 pounds and that WiFi was extra- yikes!  We need that tropical weather to come soon so we can camp before the money runs out.

Supper today is cheesy triangles and other delights that have been in the panniers for a few days now – still, we do have a kettle in the room, something we’ve not seen for a while, and so we can have a nice cuppa!
