Day 8 – Villamanrique to Pedro Muñoz – 123 kms

012

April 9, 2011

At last!  We hit our 100 km per day target.

After all the hill climbing of the last few days it was great to find ourselves on a perfectly flat and perfectly straight road.  We were able to really get the big cog spinning and eat up the miles.   The road ran through fields of vines which stretched to the horizon in all directions.  I guess these are plains of Spain (no rain though – blistering heat again).

We passed through several noteworthy towns, the nicest of which was Villanueva de Los Infantes, which has a beautiful central plaza built on a grand scale.  Here we whiled away an hour or so,  indulging in apple pie that was also built on a grand scale and watching two fairly elderly women trying to climb onto a statue of Sancho Panza’s donkey to have their photos taken.  Hilarious.
