Day 47 – Spalding to Brandon – 97 kms

005

May 18, 2011

We wake up to a really dull day, and what is worse, there is a fierce wind blowing.  The sky is as black as night with not a single bit of blue to be seen.  Not the most promising of cycling days.

Our route for today will be heading south-east across the fens – will the wind be a blessing or a curse?

Well, it certainly isn´t a blessing.  The roads across the fens tend to be straight and follow the edges of the drainage dykes on a grid system.  We find our route is a series of zig-zags; half the time the wind hits us from the side and threatens to upend us into the ditches and the other half it is in our faces and nearly stops us dead.  Fortunately, our legs have freed up a bit since yesterday and we make steady progress.

We nearly decide to end the day early when it starts to rain later in the afternoon, but we persist and complete near to our 100 km target.  With luck the weather will improve tomorrow.
