We stick to our strategy of choosing the tiniest of back roads and ride through a beautiful, typically English, rural landscape. Thatched cottages and leafy lanes all the way. We reach the South Downs, which I can tell you have as many ups as downs.
The roads we ride are very quiet, winding, hilly and bumpy – not made for speed, but for steady progress. Still, we prefer to do more miles and make slow progress than to risk life and limb on the faster routes.
We pass a ‘white horse’ on the hillside and keep seeing signposts for ‘Swindon’ that all say 8 miles even though we’ve done another 5 miles since the last one – very strange – are we going in circles?
The sun keeps shining for us but will it last? The forecast for tomorrow is not good.
